A DEVELOPER has been working with the public as part of the refurbishment of a 1960s office and workshop complex.

Investment and development company Gort, which is based in London, is working on the site at Hopetown Park and has forged strong community relations through the project.

The company has taken pro-active measures to canvass and address feedback given by residents on the regeneration work being carried out at the site.

Hopetown Park is the former Whessoe International site, and current home to the global Skanska Construction Group and Darlington Borough Council.

The existing development consists of a five-storey main building, two-storey west wing and vacant workshop to the rear.

Recladding and refurbishment of the workshop has already started on-site, with the new Studio One section of the development providing 5,000sq ft of modern office space for new tenant, the National Care Standards Commission.

Gort spokesman Doug Hardman said: "Gort is keen to generate a long-term involvement with the North-East, as we see great potential for development in the region and are looking to invest further in building dynamic partnerships here.

"As with any redevelopment work, Gort takes a hands-on approach to ensure that the immediate local community understands the ultimate aims of the scheme, and has the opportunity to discuss any queries and concerns they may have.

"Hopetown Park is an excellent example of this ethos in practice. We have worked closely with the local residents' association to address feedback on noise and privacy, and feel that suitable measures have been taken to ensure all parties are satisfied with the development."

Ronald Hick, chairman of the Oakfield Lodge Residents' Association, said: "Gort has been extremely co-operative in addressing our questions on the Hopetown Park development.

"Although we are fully supportive of the scheme, we obviously had initial concerns about potential intrusion of privacy.

"However, Gort took immediate measures to improve the fencing around residential properties - providing increased privacy for homeowners.

"Ultimately, the scheme is very beneficial for Darlington and has already brought a notable tenant to the area."

The second phase, Studio Two, within the same development, is now available to let. It incorporates a two-storey plan for the main studio space, with a third-storey tower to complete the 15,000sq ft development.
