A CAMPAIGN to build a new community centre in a run-down area of Teesside has received a £300,000 boost.

The cash award, from the National Lottery's Community Fund, means the long-awaited Trinity Centre, in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough, is about to become a reality.

Only £80,000 is now needed in order for the centre, incorporating a community centre, performing arts stage, medical village and pharmacy, to be built.

The Reverend Graham Usher, who launched the campaign, said he hoped the £750,000 centre would inspire community pride.

"We are thrilled and delighted with this wonderful news of support," he said.

"This is indeed a positive story for North Ormesby, which has had its fair share of knocks in the recent past.

"The new Trinity Centre of Excellence will benefit all of the community and will be the first new public building to be sited in North Ormesby for many years."

In just over four months, parishioners of Holy Trinity Church, community members, market traders and former residents have raised £120,000 for the centre. The scheme also received a £250,000 award from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

Local entertainment group the Minstrals will use the centre as a base. Maureen Robinson, of the group, said: "After many years of performances in less than ideal accommodation we are delighted with the wonderful news that the Trinity Centre is to go ahead.

"We have been supporting the project from the start and we look forward to entertaining the community in our new performance space."

* South Bank Women's Centre, which provides support services to local women, including childcare provision and educational opportunities, has been awarded £287,211 from the National Lottery's Community Fund.

Local MP Vera Baird was delighted by the news.

She said: "I am very glad to see the centre getting the recognition and support that it fully deserves. The women of South Bank have worked extremely hard to increase their opportunities through training and developing skills and I wish them well in their efforts."
