THE exit slip road from the eastbound A64 at Copmanthorpe, near York, will be closed overnight tomorrow to allow a new footbridge spanning the East Coast main line to be lifted into place.

The road will be closed from 6pm tomorrow until 11am on Sunday. Two mobile cranes will lower the 45-tonne superstructure into position.

ARMY CHURCH: A church and chaplaincy centre will be opened for the teenage students of Harrogate Army College, in North Yorkshire, on Tuesday. The inter-denominational St Alban's replaces a 1960s building, which was demolished two years ago.

TWINning VISIT: Mayor Stuart Parsons and town clerk Dr Peter Clarke are part of a civic party which will leave Richmond on Wednesday for a six-day twining trip to Nord-Fron, in Norway. On September 12, a public meeting will discuss twinning between Richmond and the French town of St Aubin-du-Cormier, in Brittany.

HEADteacher RESIGNS: Peter Acaster, headteacher of Scarborough Pindar School, has resigned because of ill-health. Mr Acaster, 52, who has been headteacher at the 700-pupil school for eight years, has been off since January.

GARDEN PARTY: Ripon hospital League of Friends is holding a garden party at the hospital tomorrow, at 2pm. The event includes a cake stall, tombola, raffle and bring and buy and will be opened by the Mayoress of Ripon. Cakes or other items for sale may be left at the hospital entrance.

CIVIC SERVICE: Kirkby-Moorside mayor John Bowes is holding a civic service at All Saints' Church on Sunday, at 3pm at which the town's brass band will be performing.

FLIGHT WARNING: Four Tornado aircraft will be taking off from RAF Leeming at 6am next Wednesday to fly to Cyprus. The early take-off is due to air traffic control conditions. Another wave of four aircraft will take off at 7am and a final two at 8am.
