POLICE are appealing for witnesses after thieves made off with a quantity of cash from a newsagents.

A shop assistant, from SMS Newsagents, in Collingwood Street, Coundon, near Bishop Auckland, was distracted by one man while his accomplice entered the store room and stole money on Tuesday, at 3pm.

One of the men is described as white, in his mid-20s, 5ft 8in, with short, straight mousy hair. The other, also white and about the same age, was slightly taller and slim, with dark hair brushed to one side. He was unshaven and unkempt.

Anyone who might have seen the men in the area of Collingwood Street on Tuesday, or saw them entering the store, is asked to contact Detective Constable Jim Lawrie or PC Sarah Bainbridge, of Bishop Auckland police, on (01388) 603566
