A 12-year-old boy will appear in court on Wednesday charged with attempted rape.
Detectives said the 11-year-old victim was allegedly attacked behind a video store, in the Kenton area of Newcastle last Wednesday night.
It is understood that the alleged attack was witnessed by a nine-year-old girl.
The boy is due to appear at Newcastle Youth Court in Gosforth.
