A CONSTRUCTION company has won an environmental award for building green schools in County Durham.

Eco-friendly additions to Catchgate Primary near Annfield Plain and Middlestone Moor

Primary near Spennymoor have won praise for Miller Construction. The company included wind-turbines, rainwater recycling facilities and large skylights built to utilise natural daylight in the project. The work was designed to save energy and help pupils to become more environmentally aware. Miller Construction was awarded the County Durham 2001 Environment Award for improving the county's environment.

Brass Band: Langley Park Colliery Band is to give a free concert from the bandstand at Consett Heritage Park, County Durham, on Sunday at 2.30pm.

Play Time: Sport, children's entertainment and bouncy castles will be at the park in Lanchester, behind the Kings Head, today from 11am to 4pm. Admission is £2.50, or free for adults and the under-threes.

Picture postcards: Pittington Photography Club will visit Seal Sands and the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge on Monday. Members should meet at Pittington village hall.

Farmers' market: The regular market featuring farmers' and country produce will be held today in Durham Market Place between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

Story fun: Two hour-long story sessions for youngsters will be held by Marion Jackson at Newton Hall Library, in Durham, on Monday at 9.30am and 11am.
