MANAGERS of a troubled visitor attraction are to hold talks with the Government on an action plan.

The future of the National Glass Centre in Sunderland has been secured for the next three years, thanks to a £500,000 grant. The cash will come from the Arts Council of England, Northern Arts, the University of Sunderland and the city council.

An expert appointed by the Arts Council is due to meet Jules Preston, the centre's chief executive, on Friday, August 23, when talks will centre on improving visitors numbers up, and the issue of admission prices.

"We will be agreeing a timetable for action," said Mr Preston.

He said some of the extra cash had gone to creditors. The rest will pay for further work on the centre, following recent upgrading of the studio area and the creation of workspace for businesses.

Centre chairman John Anderson has stepped down after four years and is replaced by Professor Peter Fidler, vice- chancellor of the University of Sunderland.

"Action is being taken and we are taking it very seriously," said Mr Preston. "We are confident about our future."

Coun Brian Dodds, the city council's cabinet spokesman on culture, arts, sport and leisure, said: "Glass has a crucial place in the city's history.

"The council's support is important, but it's also the key to unlocking more funding from other sources."
