A GROUP of girls who found themselves with nothing to do during the summer holidays have been given a chance to try out different activities.

The teenagers, all from North Ormesby, found themselves left on the sidelines while the boys played in a daily football tournament organised at the Pallister Park Centre.

PC Angie Suggitt, who works as part of the Neighbourhood Renewal Project, said: "I saw the girls were hanging around at a loose end and asked them if they would be interested in me organising something for them to do.

"While there were plenty of activities on offer for the boys with the five-a-side football competition, they seemed to be left out."

The girls came up with a list of ideas of what they would like to try, including aerobics, hair and beauty, and kick boxing.

This week hairdresser Alison Oakley from Snippers Salon, in the Southlands Centre, gave the girls a demonstration on how to plait, curl and style their hair, and has invited the group to apply for a Saturday job with her if they are interested.

Next week, Teesside kick-boxing instructor Gary Jowers has agreed to put the girls through their paces.

PC Suggitt said: "For these 14-year-olds, the summer will now mean they have a chance to try out some new activities, learn some new skills, and it could even lead to a part-time job for one of them."
