POLICE investigating four suspicious deaths at an Army barracks, including that of a North-East teenager, are looking into a fifth case, it emerged yesterday.

Private David Shipley was found unconscious in an assault course pool in Germany earlier this year, just days after he left Deepcut barracks, the Surrey headquarters of the Royal Logistic Corps.

Pte Shipley's mother, Jenny, who lives in Cumbria, has revealed that her son was bullied during his time at Deepcut, and she believes his death was suspicious.

It follows those of four young recruits, including Pte Geoff Gray, 17, from Seaham, County Durham, who were all discovered with gunshot wounds.

The others were Pte Cheryl James, 18, Pte Sean Benton, 20, from Hastings, East Sussex, and Pte James Collinson, 17, from Perth, Scotland.

Although an Army investigation decided all four committed suicide, a coroner recorded open verdicts on Privates Gray and James.

All of the youngsters' parents have called for a public inquiry into their deaths and Surrey Police have reopened their cases. Yesterday, police revealed they are now looking at Pte Shipley's death in connection to the other cases.

Pte Gray's family, who no longer live in County Durham, have repeatedly denied that their son committed suicide, but the police investigation has been hampered because evidence, such as his clothing and log books, was destroyed hours after his death.
