A MULTIPLE sclerosis sufferer has braved a sailing challenge to help raise cash for others with the condition.

The Darlington and district branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society needs to raise £135,000 to pay for a minibus and static caravan to help its members to go on trips and take holidays.

David Moss, of Marwood Crescent, Darlington, raised more than £1,000 after sailing from Swansea to Liverpool last month with a crew of four other men as part of a seven-day voyage.

David was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis three years ago, at the age of 23.

Since then, his family have been members of the society and involved in a number of fundraising activities.

His mother, Christine, said: "It is so important that the money is raised as the branch needs the caravan next year. They desperately need more funds.

"It would be a big boon for those people who are sufferers of the disease and for the immediate families who are all affected.

"David can't go out for a walk any longer, he has to be taken in his wheelchair. The minibus would be of great benefit to the society and its members."

A bus, with room for six wheelchairs, would save members of the branch the high cost of wheelchair-accessible taxis.

Although £22,500 has been raised through donations, Anna Barrett, secretary of the branch, appealed for help to reach the target.

Money will be collected as part of a flag day in the town centre on Monday next week.

Donations can be sent to the treasurer at The Byers, Rose Hill Farm, Middleton Tyas, North Yorkshire, DL10 6PX.
