A BISHOP Auckland soldier has landed one of the Army's top honours.
Private Craig Patterson has been awarded the prize for best recruit, which recognises the person who has performed to the highest standards throughout their recruitment course.
The award came at the end of a 13-week combat infantryman's course, which teaches infantry soldiers to work as part of a team in an operational environment.
It included subjects such as first aid, weapons handling and firing live ammunition.
Pte Patterson, a former pupil of King James I Community College, enlisted in the Army six months ago.
He completed basic training in Winchester, before being posted to Catterick Garrison.
He said he was thrilled to win the prize and is now looking forward to joining his regiment, the 1st Battalion, The Light Infantry, based in Germany.
