BUDDING star Pete Shoulder is to help his local social club by appearing at a centenary night celebration at the weekend.

The 18-year-old guitarist will perform a solo acoustic set, featuring a range of cover material, at Saturday's party night at the recently reopened Waldridge Fell Club, near Chester-le-Street, County Durham.

Pete, from nearby Wald-ridge Village, signed a six-album deal with recording company Sony last year, and is between visits to the US where he is working with established musicians on the first of those discs.

While at home he is a familiar figure at the club, which opened as a private concern in May, nine months after the former Waldridge Workingmen's Club closed in the same building.

New licensee Fiona Mills and her husband, Stuart, acquired the premises and gave it a revamp. They have built up a membership of 450 from areas including Teesside and Tyneside.

Although the foundation stone in the building is dated 1905, an old photograph in the lounge shows the original club opened in a nearby hut, alongside the original Waldridge drift mine, in August 1902.

Mrs Mills said they decided to stage some form of celebration to mark the centenary and were lucky that Pete offered his services.

Admission on Saturday, inclusive of a buffet, is £2, payable at the door, with the event getting under way at about 8pm.
