PLANS to restore Weardale's historic railway line are gathering pace as applications are sought for the post of project leader.
Weardale Railway Trust, which intends to re-open the redundant line, hopes the post will be filled by the start of next month.
The plans for the railway line have received Government backing and the project leader will be responsible for generating cash to reinstate the line from Bishop Auckland to Stanhope and, eventually, to Eastgate.
It is hoped that with the dedication of its 400 volunteers, a passenger service could be in operation by 2004.
Brian Morris, from the trust, said: "We will be looking for someone who knows a little about the project and someone who knows how to handle people.''
Two diesel trains have been purchased and a maintenance depot will be set up in Wolsingham. In addition, repairs need to be carried out to the infrastructure, which includes bridges, signalling and stations.
Funding for the project is coming from a variety of sources, including Durham County Council, Wear Valley District Council, One NorthEast and Europe.
