WORK has begun on a £4m breast screening unit in the region.

The new facility at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead will include state-of-the-art cancer detection, treatment and training facilities.

It is a key project in a £30m modernisation drive by Gateshead Health NHS Trust.

The completion of the first phase of the centre next spring will increase the trust's breast screening efficiency and allow more women to be screened, in line with new NHS targets.

The new building will have an integrated breast screening and symptomatic unit, with a separate magnetic resonance imaging suite housing a new scanner.
