THE number of parents appealing against the secondary school placement of their child has doubled in an area of Cleveland.

The Redcar and Cleveland School Admissions Authority dealt with 65 independent appeals this year, compared to 32 last summer.

However, a report to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council noted that 95 per cent of all children entering secondary schools for the first time in September were offered places at the school of their parents' choice.

Six out of the borough's 11 secondary schools were oversubscribed. They were: Eston Park, Huntcliff, Laurence Jackson, Nunthorpe, Rye Hills and St Peter's RC.

Only one disappointed parent has taken up the right to appeal to the Local Government Ombudsman. The others have accepted the judgement of independent appeals panels.

All parental applications for places in reception classes of infant and primary schools were successful across the district.
