A FORMER garage could be turned into shops, offices, a takeaway and a doctor's or dentist's surgery.

Developers Evans has submitted proposals to City of York Council to convert the former Henley's garage site, off Stonebow. The conversion would include food outlets, offices and a surgery. The scheme has won the backing of council officials, who are recommending that councillors approve it, subject to planning conditions. The application goes before the council's planning and transport committee on Thursday.

LATE OPENING: A second Scarborough school has told pupils not to return this week because repairs to flood damage are not completed. Last week the town's Pindar Secondary School, in Eastfield, said work was not yet finished and now Braeburn Junior School says it will not re-open until the middle of the month.

SHOW TIME: Rillington and District Horticultural and Industrial Society's 79th annual show will be held in the village hall on Thursday, September 19. Schedules are now available from local businesses and committee members. Entry forms should be submitted by 8pm on Monday, September 16.

PARK PLAN: London-based Euro Car Parks has applied for permission to build a 200-space carpark in Palmer Lane, near Stonebow, York. It would be on land formerly occupied by the Derwent Coachworks and part of the old Northern Electric depot. The plans are expected to be approved on Thursday.

TRACK REFUSED: Plans to create a new vehicle access and access track at Bellwood Farm, Harrogate Road, Littlethorpe, near Ripon, have been refused by Harrogate Borough Council planners. They have told applicant Timothy Able that the scheme would unduly harm the landscape of the approach to Ripon on the A61 because of earthworks. It would also mean loss of a hedgerow boundary and introduce a track through an agricultural field.

SCHOOL'S OUT: A plan to erect a temporary classroom at Holy Trinity Church of England Junior School, in Church Lane, Ripon, is being opposed by Harrogate Borough Council planners who are objecting on principle to temporary classroom accommodation.

HEALTH MEETING: The next meeting of the Harrogate and District Community Health Council is next Monday at 7.30pm, at Christ Church, Harrogate.

SHIP MEMORIES: The hospital ship Rohilla, which foundered off the coast of Whitby in 1914, is the subject of a new exhibition of photographs and video footage at the Whitby Heritage Centre. The exhibition will run for the next two weeks at the centre on Flowergate.

CHARITY CASH: A coffee morning held recently at Strawberry Fields, Sinnington, in aid of the Meningitis Trust, raised £803.

WHIST DRIVE: A semi-partner whist drive will be taking place in Elvington village hall on Thursday, at 7.30pm, in aid of Kexby Church funds. Admission is £1.25.
