MIDDLESBROUGH last night gave a six-week trial to Icelandic teenager Sigurdur Donys - after their interest in the striker was exclusively revealed by Northern Echo Sport.

After Newcastle United tried to hijack Boro's move for Donys, Riverside bosses invited the 16-year-old to return to Teesside after an impressive first spell with the club earlier this month.

Donys, dubbed "the new Eidur Gudjohnsen" in his homeland, is one of European football's hottest young properties.

He scored twice in a practice match with Boro recently and has now been given the chance to earn a full-time youth contract.

Donys, who was born in Guatemala but was adopted and moved to Iceland when he was three, was also wanted by clubs in Germany and Norway.

Meanwhile, Chesterfield are poised to sign Middlesbrough midfielder Mark Hudson on a permanent basis after agreeing a fee of £100,000 with the Premiership club.

The 21-year-old, Boro's reserve team captain, has been on loan with the Spireites for the past month and Middlesbrough have agreed to accept monthly payments to assist the Spireites' tight cashflow situation.

There is also a 50 per cent sell-on clause and Chesterfield manager Dave Rushbury said: ''I am delighted that the two clubs have been able to thrash out a deal.

''After Mark has put pen to paper I think we can all look forward to the start of an exciting future for the Spireites.''
