ACTION is to be taken against speeding motorists on Scarborough's Barrowcliffe estate following protests from worried parents and the police.

North Yorkshire County Council is to spend £75,000 creating 20mph zones on the approaches to the Barrowcliffe junior and infant schools, after ten-year-old Sammy Dove suffered severe injuries when she was hit by a car last year. Councillor Bill Chatt said the zones would make conditions safer for children on the estate. David Evans, head of the junior school, said: "We are very happy that something is being done because there has been a great deal of concern about road safety on the estate." The speed limits are to be introduced in Barrowcliffe Road, Briercliffe, and there will also be speed "cushions" built on the estate.

INQUEST OPENED: An inquest was opened and adjourned yesterday into the death of two-year-old Hazel Amelia Geldard Weston, from Rathmell, which lies between Skipton and Settle, who died following an accident at her home on Saturday evening.

QUARRY PLANS: The next phase of Ripon City Quarry development has been given planning permission by North Yorkshire County Council. But planning officers have insisted on a detailed scheme for soil removal.
