CHILDREN in Northallerton were in the driving seat for a road safety lesson last week.

Youngsters who go to the town's Looby Lou's nursery were treated to the arrival of a police car on Thursday as the session got under way.

One of the children's father is traffic police officer Martin Usher and he came up with the idea of having fun while projecting a vital message.

Up to 30 three to five-year-olds got to see the range of equipment in the patrol car and practised road safety theory with a battery-operated vehicle.

Nursery owner Anne-Louise Cooper said: "The children learn through play and we find that is what suits them best.

"We thave a theme day once a month with visits from people such as dentists and vets. Everyone is always so generous with their time."
