A SUPPORT system set up to help Darlington business women get a better deal is celebrating its first anniversary.

The Darlington Women into Business Network was created to help women set up their own businesses and make them a success.

The network now has 120 members who meet regularly to discuss their businesses and how they can improve.

The network also runs a mentoring scheme which trains successful business women to help others by giving practical advice.

Marina Douglas, from the network, said: "I would like to say congratulations to all our network members for their continued effort, commitment and support for each other during our first year of operation."

The women hold regular networking meetings at Pizza Express, in Skinnergate, which is also supporting the women by displaying some of their creative work and offering it for sale.

Ms Douglas said: "We have organised events and exhibitions that have generated income for our members and we continue to develop, create, expand and support the business women in and around the Darlington community.

"We are still looking for new members and would love to hear from anyone who could benefit from our help."

Among the success stories generated by the network is Dorothy Cormack, who started her own business as a reflexologist after learning new skills at college.

Mrs Cormack, 55, recently won the Against Adversity Award at the Women in Business Awards after making her business a success despite having to nurse her terminally ill husband.

Ms Douglas said: "Dorothy continues to astound as she strives each day to face her many challenges. We are pleased to report that her business continues to grow from strength to strength."
