AN innovative scheme to offer affordable homes in a village where property prices have soared has been opened by one of the most respected figures in the building industry.

Sir Michael Duncan, who is chairman of the Arup Trustee companies, presented door keys to people living on the new Wesley View estate, in Wolsingham.

Occupants of the 26 houses and bungalows can either rent their homes or share ownership with developers the Three Rivers housing group.

Three properties were adapted for wheelchair access after consultation with occupational therapists.

Funding for the project was through a £684,000 grant from the Housing Corporation, backed by private investment.

Clare Hepworth, chairman of Three Rivers, said: "It is important that people, young and old, in a rural town like Wolsingham have the choice in staying in their own community if they wish.

"Housing in rural areas has a particular set of issues and the vision and effort of the partners have made this scheme a success."

Sir Duncan said: "I am encouraged to see that good design and community focus in Wolsingham has offered a housing solution that has served the local needs."
