FIVE building companies have been launched by pupils for a construction challenge.

More than 50 teenagers took up the Enterprise in Construction Challenge to form companies and draw up plans for the redevelopment of the Blue Circle Cement Works in Weardale.

Pupils from Sunnydale School, Shildon, Wolsingham School and Community College, and St John's RC Comprehensive School, King James I Community College and Bishop Barrington Comprehensive School, all in Bishop Auckland, are taking part. Each team is exploring ideas to revive the works, which closed in August with the loss of 147 jobs.

An awards ceremony at Auckland Castle will be held when the winners are announced in January.

Set by the Construction Industry Training Board and Bishop Auckland construction firm M&M Plasline, the project aims to introduce youngsters to careers in the construction industry and offer the chance to work in a business environment.
