YOUNG golfers are being offered the chance to be coached by a professional.

A junior golf coaching course is being held at Durham City Golf Club, Littleburn, Langley Moor, from October 28 to November 1. It has been organised by Durham City Council, and coaching will be given by Professional Golf Association member Steve Corbally. The course comprises five 30-minute sessions, from 8.30am to 10.30am each morning, and costs £10. HISTORY SOCIETY: The Durham branch of the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society will meet at Fyndoune Community College, Sacriston, on Monday, October 21, at 7.15pm, when local historian Michael Richardson will give a slide show based on his latest book, Durham City Remembered: 1935 to 1960.

COFFEE MORNING: The 1st Framwellgate Moor Scout Group will hold a coffee morning on Saturday, October 19, between 9.30am and 12.30pm. Admission is free and attractions include tombola and cake stalls.

CRAFT FAIR: A craft fair takes place in Catchgate Chapel School room tomorrow, between 10am and 2pm. Admission is £2.50, and includes dinner and a sweet. Proceeds will go to church funds.

VALUATION NIGHT: Bethel United Reform Church, in Chester-le-Street, will be the venue for an antiques valuation night, next Friday, between 7pm and 9pm. Visitors can pay £1 per valuation and there will be tea, coffee and a raffle. All proceeds will go to Cancer Research UK.

MAST APPLICATION: Planning permission is being sought by Orange PCS to put up a telephone mast and equipment cabin in a field to the east of the A1(M) motorway, east of Brecon Hill, between Lumley and Bournmoor. Orange says it needs the mast to handle the number of calls during peak demand in that area. So far, two letters opposing the mast have been received by Chester-le-Street District Council. The plans are recommended for approval and will go before councillors on Monday.
