MOTORISTS are warned of changes in the road lay-out as work improving the A167 Chester-le-Street bypass moves on to its next phase.

The major road scheme refurbishing Park Road North and Central, between Ropery Lane roundabout and the Blind Lane A1(M) interchange, began on September 2.

Contractors are now able to reopen the northbound carriageway following initial work on the Roman Avenue footbridge and Chester Burn Bridge, plus resurfacing between Ropery Lane and Picktree Lane roundabouts.

It means similar work will begin on the southbound carriageway with the contra-flow system due to be changed overnight this Thursday.

Users approaching this section of the A167 from Friday onwards are advised to do so with extra caution, and to be aware of the change in the traffic management lay-out.

The new contra-flow is expected to be in place for about four weeks.

Highways Agency officials have thanked motorists for heeding advice and warnings so far, and for seeking alternative routes, wherever possible.

A spokesman said: "It has reduced delays to a minimum, ensuring they are kept to a minimum, and allowing the work to proceed safely and efficiently."
