A teenager freed herself after a terrifying three-hour hostage ordeal only to find her attacker trying to hang himself nearby.

Nicola Oley, 19, was tied up and beaten by Mokbul Hussain, 24, after she was lured to his home in Gateshead Terrace, Boldon, South Tyneside.

Hussain, who had been due to have an arranged marriage in Bangladesh, had accused the teenager of cheating on him and launched a savage attack when she entered the house.

But she managed to bite through the binds and ran to the hallway, where she was confronted by Hussain hanging by his neck from a bracket with a length of rope attached.

Newcastle Crown Court heard how she frantically cut him down using a knife, but as soon as he was freed from the self-made noose he started attacking her again.

Tim Parkin, prosecuting, told the court she managed to protect herself by hitting him with a lamp.

Tony Hawks, mitigating, said Hussain had drunk a bottle of rum before the attack.

He said: "This spectacular piece of behaviour was completely out of character."

Hussain was jailed for three years for the attack. He received a further six months from a previous suspended sentence when he was caught with a stash of cocaine, making a total of three-and-a-half years.

Judge Michael Taylor told him: "Over a period of three hours you subjected her to terrifying violence. No doubt that girl thought her life was at great risk."

Hussain pleaded guilty to false imprisonment and assault.
