A HOUSEMASTER at a top college has been fired over claims of "improper physical contact" with a pupil.

The teacher at Ampleforth College, near Helmsley, North Yorkshire, has been sacked following an incident with a sixth-former more than ten years ago.

According to a college spokesman, Father Christian Shore, a housemaster for 18 years, acknowledged that he behaved in an "unprofessional manner" towards the male student concerned and deeply regretted his actions.

Abbot Timothy Wright said: "It is clear that Fr Christian failed to maintain the highest standards of care and professionalism which we promote.

"He feels great remorse for his actions and extends his heartfelt apologies to the former student."

Following an internal investigation and risk assessment at the North Yorkshire college, Fr Shore will now be replaced and will prepare and train for other works of the monastic community.

Earlier this year, North Yorkshire Police and social services were called in to investigate after the college was made aware of rumours that a former sixth-former had been sexually abused. The allegations focused on a single incident in the student's final year.

A police spokesman confirmed that an investigation had occurred, but no further action was taken.

Since Fr Shore took administrative leave in early April, no formal complaint or further reports of allegations have been made to the authorities.

According to the college, Fr Shore has been advised by his lawyers that his actions do not give grounds for criminal proceedings.

Parents of pupils are being reassured that the college is continuously striving to ensure the highest standards and fullest safeguards.
