PLANS to convert a former carpet shop in Stockton into a pub look set to be approved despite concerns from neighbours.

Stockton Borough Council's planning committee has received an application to convert the former Bernard Povey store, in Bishopton Lane, Stockton, into a pub.

The Workers' Educational Association, which has offices above the premises, has objected to the plans.

They said noise from the pub would interfere with its work and there may be an increase in anti-social behaviour. They also claimed there are too many pubs and nightclubs in the area.

A report to the committee, which meets today, said: "Pubs have the potential to give rise to anti-social behaviour. However, this issue alone is difficult to sustain as a reason for refusal.

"These types of problems are more likely to occur late at night when the office would normally be closed for business.

"It has to be recognised the site is within the town centre next to existing licensed premises. There is no evidence to suggest one further public house should not adversely affect its business to any significant degree more than present uses nearby.

"This is a unit close to the High Street and in an area of mixed commercial uses, which has been vacant for some time. Approval for the development will bring it back into use."
