WASTE carriers are being warned that failing to register with the Environment Agency could land them in court.
Companies transporting or dealing in controlled waste as part of their business, or for profit, are required by law to register with the agency.
But it has discovered that many small businesses are unaware of this and run the risk of being fined £5,000 if prosecuted.
Now the agency is warning them by sending out information packs with details on how to register and an application form.
Andrew Wood, the Environment Agency's North-East regional director, said: "Any business which carries amounts of controlled waste, however small, needs to be registered with Environment Agency, so their customers can be confident that the waste is being dealt with correctly.
"As well as carriers of waste, those who arrange for the disposal of waste, known as waste brokers, must also register.
"The agency would much rather people were aware of the law and be registered than take them to court, but anyone flouting the law knowingly will be prosecuted."
