THE public are about to be given more of a say in the decision-making process when it comes to planning applications.
From January, objectors, developers and parish councillors will be allowed to speak at Hambleton District Council planning meetings.
Parish councils will be able to address councillors first, followed by one person for and one against the application in question. Each will be given three minutes to make their point.
The chairman of the development control committee, Geoff Ellis, said: "We believe this will help to reflect the openness and transparency of the planning process.
"And it should enable councillors to have a clearer understanding of all aspects of applications, through speakers with local knowledge of matters under consideration."
He added: "We do not believe the introduction of public speaking at these meetings will unduly delay the business of the committee."
Those intending to speak at meetings will have to arrive 20 minutes before its start and register an interest with a council officer.
A leaflet explaining the process will be available from the council next month.
