STAFF and pupils at a Bishop Auckland school have double cause for celebration.

Woodhouse Close Junior School has received the Activemark award from Sport England for its promotion of physical activity.

The school will also be able to offer more sport, because its has obtained a £1,050 grant for table-tennis equipment from the National Lottery Awards For All scheme.

PE co-ordinator Stephen Lockey said everyone was delighted because fewer than 200 schools in the country held the award.

He said: "Alongside PE lessons we run after-school classes and have strong links with the community.

"Activities such as swimming, football, table-tennis, cricket, tag rugby and, in future, basketball mean there is something for most youngsters to try.

"PE is important for their health and social skills, and sport gives those youngsters who do not always shine academically something new to do well at.

"The grant for extra table-tennis equipment is a great boost and enables us to build on our success."
