STRAYS may be having a dog's life at the moment - but that is all set to change in east Cleveland.

Four years after launching an appeal to build a home for unwanted pets, a dedicated band of animal lovers has started a search for sites.

Anne Prosser, chairman of Saltburn Animal Rescue Association (Sara), said: "We have got our names down with some estate agents and have been in touch with the council.

"We are letting people know we are looking for somewhere, possibly a farm. We are not in a position to buy, but are seriously looking," she said.

"The more we look the more we realise the need for this sanctuary, the demand is increasing. It has got to happen."

The Association launched the appeal when it only had six members. It now boasts 140 paid-up members but also takes abandoned dogs and cats each month. Sara needs £300,000 to set up the project and is heading towards being a third of the way there.

"We are so encouraged. It is what keeps us going," said Mrs Prosser.

She said the association was looking for somewhere with between two and five acres in size with room to develop.

"We would start very small, probably with ten kennels and a ten unit cattery, and would keep on our foster carers, nine for dogs and two for cats.

"We would keep that resource and gradually grow. We don't want to jump too quickly and fail."

Mrs Prosser said irresponsible pet owners were to blame for the district's stray animal problem.

She said: "These unwanted animals are the result of irresponsible owners.

"It's not about a lack of resources by the council or the failure of organisations."
