Joe Williams, 57, general manager University of Sunderland Students' Union, has been awarded an MBE.
Mr Williams, of Ryhope, Sunderland, has worked for the university for nine years.
"I am overcome, but delighted," he said. "To be awarded an MBE for something that I really enjoy doing is wonderful."
University of Sunderland vice-chancellor Professor Peter Fidler said: "Joe has helped to forge an outstanding partnership between all those involved in running the Students' Union which has made it one of the best - if not the best - in the country."
Mr Williams was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the University of Sunderland in 1998, in recognition of his achievements.
