A GROUP of youngsters fed up with being moved on when playing street football are celebrating after being given a place to play.

The footballers, aged nine and ten, approached council bosses to help them find somewhere safe to play, after growing tired of being chased away by residents who were worried that the games would lead to property being damaged.

The group, all from the Albany area of Washington, Tyne and Wear, took their problem to local resident and member of the Washington Housing Group, Joe Carter. Together with Councillor Harry Trueman, the group set about finding a site.

Sunderland City Council and Sunderland Housing Group bought a green space and have supplied goalposts.

Gavin Brierley, one of the youngsters involved, said: "We think this is great. It gives us somewhere to play that is safe and our parents know where we are."
