A SCIENCE park tapping into the expertise at a neighbouring university campus could create up to 200 jobs.

Sunderland City Council, university and business bosses in Sunderland are considering plans for a technology business park next to the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's Riverside site, on the north bank of the River Wear.

It would form part of a drive to keep university graduates in the city by helping them develop business ideas.

The earmarked site, already in university ownership, has space for up to 93 offices.

Sunderland University business development leaders believe there is potential for companies which use technology and digital media.

The anticipated cost of between £4m and £5m would be met, in part, by European and Government grants.

The city council will discuss the plan next week.
