PASSENGER groups last night warned of increased overcrowding on some services following cuts to the rail network.

The North-East escaped relatively unscathed as 104 daily services across the country were slashed by the Strategic Rail Authority to cut congestion and improve reliability. But some Virgin Cross Country services to Scotland via the East Coast Mainline beyond York fell by the wayside.

The North-East Rail Passengers Committee said the cuts would lead to more overcrowding on Arriva services in the region.

A service to Aberdeen calling at York, Durham, Darlington, Newcastle, Berwick, Edinburgh and Dundee will be replaced by a service on the West Coast Mainline.
