EIGHTY youngsters enjoyed a break from their studies yesterday - to tuck into a hearty breakfast.

They chomped their way through bacon butties and sausage sandwiches, washed down with glasses of milk.

The youngsters, from Woodlands Primary School, Harrogate, were at the Great Yorkshire Showground as part of a national initiative, Farmhouse Breakfast Week.

On a theme of Eat Local, the nine and ten-year-olds heard where food comes from and how it is produced, as well as the value of farmers' markets.

Teacher Caroline Wood said: "It's been marvellous as the children have been able to get a better understanding of farming and food production. We used to be able to visit farms, but because of hygiene regulations that isn't so easy now."

The bacon and sausages were provided by Grant and Mark Burton, of JH and M Burton, of Manor House Farm, Wilberfoss, near York, who explained how their pigs were reared and the meat produced.

The milk was provided by Arla Foods.

The youngsters were able to try dough plaiting as part of a demonstration by Ken Davill, of Davills Patisserie, Ripon.

Members of the group Ladies in Pigs gave a cookery demonstration, including making the children's breakfasts.
