Workers at Japanese car giant Nissan have voted to accept a two-year pay deal ending the threat of the company's first ever strike, management reported tonight.

The offer of a 3% rise this year and a further increase of 3% next year was accepted by 61% of the workers at the plant in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear.

Managing Director, John Cushnaghan commented: ''I am delighted that this matter has been fully resolved internally after extensive employee consultation.

''I feel it is a reflection of the excellent relationship the company has had with its employees over many years.''

Amicus had warned of a possible dispute with Nissan over pay.
