PEOPLE returning from a night out may have information about a sex attack on an elderly woman.

The home of the 78-year-old victim, who suffered a prolonged attack at the hands of a prowler as she lay in her bed, is not far from a popular dropping off point for people returning to Seaham, County Durham, following nights out in Sunderland and neighbouring towns.

Detective Inspector Dave Wolfe, leading the investigation into the incident, which happened early on Saturday, described the response in the area so far as excellent.

Inquiries have brought in information from a number of people who reported seeing a prowler in the area between 1am and 2am on Saturday.

He said that many people returning to Seaham after visiting night spots in neighbouring towns and cities are dropped off by taxi and other vehicles in Stockton Road, not far from the scene of the incident.

"It could be that someone has seen something which could help with our inquiries," said Det Insp Wolfe.

The attacker is described as aged between 20 and 25, was dressed in black and wearing a black hat.

He is said to have smelled of alcohol.
