A CHILDCARE partnership has appointed a new manager to oversee its work.

Geoff Dorrity has taken over as partnership and development team manager for Sunderland's Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership (EYDCP).

His responsibilities include providing support for the development team and taking the lead in working with childcare employers and providers.

Mr Dorrity, a former deputy headteacher and owner of a private day nursery, has worked for EYDCPs in Northumberland and Newcastle since 1999.

He said: "I'm confident that with the experience I've had at Newcastle and Northumberland, combined with my experience as an education and childcare provider, I will be able to bring some real benefits to the partnership."

Established in 1998, Sunderland's EYDCP plans to help create 1,000 nursery places by next year as part of the Government's Neighbourhood Nursery Initiative.

Norma Hardy, the city's head of early years and childcare, said: "We are delighted to welcome Geoff to the partnership.

"His previous experience in early years means he joins us with a great enthusiasm and understanding for the work."
