NEW registration and licensing regulations set by the DVLA to tackle car crimes have been welcomed by one of the region's MPs.
Motorists applying for a tax disc at a post office will now have to produce either the licence renewal reminder form issued from the DVLA or the vehicle's registration document.
City of York MP Hugh Bayley is encouraged by the step, saying that car crime in York is a big problem. Latest figures show that thefts in the city car parks increased last year by eight per cent.
"Too many people have their cars stolen or find themselves inadvertently buying stolen cars, so I welcome what the DVLA is doing to make sure that people who apply for tax discs have a legal right to the vehicle," he said.
"People should not mind a little inconvenience if it gives them better peace of mind about the car they are buying and cuts out the criminals."
