DOZENS of past and present students were among mourners at the funeral of a lecturer and former broadcaster.
The funeral of George English, 54, who taught media studies at New College, Durham, was held at Durham Crematorium on Friday.
Mr English, who died after a short illness, was the youngest of three brothers. He was born in Dipton, County Durham, and trained as a teacher at Bede College of Education.
He spent many years as a broadcaster for Radio Newcastle, specialising in educational issues, and also edited the parents' periodical Books For Your Children.
Mr English then taught media studies at Sunderland University, before joining New College eight years ago, where he established the media course.
During the past three summers, he ran a live radio station from the college, giving students experience of the industry.
Writer and family friend Julian Atterton led the tributes. He spoke of Mr English's love of life, deep interest in the media and arts, wit, and pride in his family and students.
Mr English's wife Eve, sons Alexander, 30, and Simon, 19, as well as his eldest brother Val, a Baptist minister in Northern Ireland, also paid tributes.
Mr English's work colleague Elizabeth Bulmer said: "George was an inspiration to us all.
"He really cared about the students and took great pride in their successes.
"We will all miss him greatly."
Head of New College's school of visual and performing arts, Flora Pearson, said: "George was a most valued colleague and will always be held in the highest esteem."
