PEOPLE are being encouraged to turn their back garden into a nature reserve - for the price of a packet of bird seed.

Roadshow workshops are being launched this month aimed at showing people across Middlesbrough how they can help keep garden birds alive during the winter, while enjoying watching them flying into the garden.

Sue Antrobus, Middlesbrough's wildspace officer, said: "We are busy creating local nature reserves in Middlesbrough, but anyone, even if they have a tiny back yard, can create their own mini nature reserve.

"Their rewards will be the pleasure of watching birds from their armchair.''

The workshops demonstrate how to make nesting boxes and bird-feeders, advice on what food is best for birds and what types of shrubs and flowers appeal to them.

The free workshops are at Meath Street Community Centre on Sunday, from 10.30am to 1pm; at Lingfield Countryside Centre, Coulby Newham, on Saturday, February 15, from 2pm to 4.30pm; and at Stainton Village Memorial Hall, from 2pm to 4.30pm on Sunday February 23.
