A CRACKDOWN on drink-fuelled crime and disorder got off to a good start this weekend, say police.
Landlords and bar managers in Consett showed their support for the police operation, with ten licensees signing up for the revamped Pubwatch scheme.
It follows the launch of the crackdown by police and Derwentside District Council on Friday, in Consett Civic Hall.
The pubs will be linked via radio to the police and security camera operators to monitor trouble-makers.
Consett town centre beat manager PC Phil Hinton said: "The scheme is going really well. Ten pubs signed up to the scheme at the meeting on Friday and took their radios home with them.
"It has been an immediate success - already we had a couple of people barred from premises this weekend for unacceptable behaviour."
The scheme costs £13 a month. Any licensees interested in joining are asked to contact PC Hinton, at Consett Police Station, on (01207) 504204.
