SEDGEFIELD Borough Council is to launch a series of Saturday night activity sessions for youths to reduce crime and disorder at weekends.

The council's leisure services department is to run its Saturday Night Spectacular at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre, with financial backing from the Children's Fund.

It starts this month and is aimed at youngsters between five and 16.

The leisure centre will stage dance coaching for the under-11s, football coaching, a pool party and roller disco for all age groups and a junior nightclub for the over-11s. There will also be monthly health discussions which parents can attend.

The football coaching will be based on Dutch football methods, while the dance coaching is open to boys and girls.

A spokesman for the council said: "This will hopefully see an improvement in the health of young people and allow them to have fun within a safe environment."

The event starts on Saturday, February 15, and runs from 5.30pm to 9.30pm at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre. The cost of taking part is £2 per person.
