THE falling population of a North-East town could lead to the closure of one of its secondary schools.

In an attempt to cut surplus places in the five secondary schools in Washington, education bosses in Sunderland are to consult the public on the closure of either Oxclose, Usworth or Washington Community comprehensive schools.

Sunderland City Council will be asked to approve consultation on the proposals at a meeting next Wednesday.

Talks will then take place with headteachers, governors and the public, with a decision expected to be made in January.

St Robert of Newminster RC and Biddick schools are unaffected by plans for closure as they are over-subscribed.
