COUNCIL workers could soon agree to have money deducted directly from their pay packet for charity.
Darlington Borough Council will decide next Tuesday whether to join the Pennies from Heaven scheme.
The initiative works by deducting the pennies from an employee's pay, leaving them with whole pounds only. The deducted money is donating to the employees' nominated charity.
If the council agrees to join the scheme, employees will be asked if they want the money to go to Pennies from Heaven, which will donate it to St Teresa's Hospice, in Darlington, for the first year.
Those paid monthly will donate no more than 99p a month while those paid weekly will hand over no more than 20p a week.
Pennies from Heaven will keep five per cent of all the money collected.
If 25 per cent of Darlington council's employees join the scheme then £6,400 could be collected a year which would increase under the Government Gift Aid scheme.
