PUPILS have taken a week out of school to help design the products of the future.

The 14 and 15-year-olds from Bishop Barrington School, Bishop Auckland, have learned all about packaging and design during a week with Smurfit Corrugated, of West Auckland.

The group of 20 were asked to design packaging for products ranging from takeaway food to toys and clothing.

Head of technology at the school Shaun Clarke said: "Smurfit have provided us with somewhere to work and with all the material.

"The students have worked together in groups for a whole day to come up with something original. They were given five design briefs and have just got on with it."

The project is part of the Young Foresight programme which is run by RTC North, one of Europe's most successful technology transfer companies, which is based in Sunderland.
