A water wheel at a mill dating from 1864 will be retained as a key feature of a plan to turn a famous Dales pub into homes and holiday apartments.
Planning chiefs say the water wheel cannot be disturbed because it is part of a listed building known as The Watermill Inn, at Low Wath Road, Pateley Bridge.
Councillors have approved conversion of the pub into two homes and five holiday apartments.
At the same meeting members of Ripon area planning committee of Harrogate Borough Council approved conversion of adjacent Fosterbeck Cottage into a pub with a bar, kitchen, tap room, games room and lounge.
Planners regard Fosterbeck Cottage as a suitable replacement for The Watermill.
Planning officer Jill North said: "The former watermill building is an important relic of the industrial past and is a well-known local landmark by virtue of the very impressive water wheel."
The water wheel was installed in 1904 and is now in a site designated as the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
