BREWERY bosses defended themselves yesterday after pulling the plug on a pub's cheeky stunt.

The Fleece, in Richmond, North Yorkshire, was the talk of the town on Monday when it changed its name to Tanya's Charms.

Regulars suggested the idea to honour 21-year-old local woman Tanya Robinson, who adorns the cover of FHM's March edition after winning the magazine's High Street Honeys competition.

The sign outside was swapped for an another, based on one of Tanya's FHM poses, which left little to the imagination.

But, while some admired the management's cheek, others were equally offended and, by Wednesday night, The Fleece had reverted to its more familiar identity.

Maureen Heffernan, spokeswoman for the owners, said: "It was all a bit of fun, supporting a local girl who won a national competition and we wanted to share that with all our customers.

"It was never intended that the sign would be permanent and we regret any offence which may have been caused - but, on the whole, we have had overwhelming support from our customers who have enjoyed a bit of light relief."

Taking a break from her latest photo-shoot in London yesterday, Tanya said she was aware of the pub's decision to revert to The Fleece.

"I was flattered by the new name and I thought it was all a bit of fun, but I think the views of local people have to be respected and it's better they are taken into account."
