VOLUNTEERS who designed new seats for a Bishop Auckland estate have been commended by councillors.

The navy blue benches have brightened up a corner of the Henknowle estate, where Millennium Volunteers have worked hard to clean up the worst areas.

The group, who are aged between 16 and 24, identified problem areas during a photography project and learned from residents that the old steel seats were ugly and uncomfortable.

Part of their aim was to bridge the generation gap between young and elderly people in the area.

Ward councillor John Lethbridge praised their achievements when he presented certificates of commendation at the district council's community services committee meeting.

He said: "This group are a wonderful example of people who have helped their community. They can be proud of what they have contributed to their estate. The seats are an excellent design and should stand for years to come."

Groundwork West Durham and Wear Valley District Council supported the volunteers, who are led by Lee Brownson. With him at the ceremony were Stuart Shipley, Niki Robinson, Steven Bainbridge and Robert Sowerby.
